George Cassista, Jr.

George Cassista, Jr., 75, of Amarillo, died Sunday, October 8, 2017. Memorial services will be 10:00 am Friday, October 13, 2017 at God of Wonders Fellowship, 1924 S. Polk St. with Pastor Randy Srader officiating. Mr. Cassista was born September 22, 1942 in Nashua, New Hampshire to Alice and George Cassista, Sr. He graduated from Nashua High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in the 9th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War from 1967-1973. He was awarded two purple hearts during that time. George earned his bachelor of fine arts degree from Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire in 1982. He had many trades throughout his lifetime. He did auto body work, was a professional fisherman in Maine, and worked as a veteran's counselor for the state of New Hampshire employment agency. He worked tirelessly for veteran's rights, and did a lot of research in the field of PTSD in the 1980's. This was a cause that was extremely important to him. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1475 in Amarillo. George was an extremely talented artist. He loved to paint and he loved serving his country in any capacity he could. The family requests that all veterans in attendance at his service wear something representing your service to our country. George was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Cassista. Survivors include a daughter, Alice Phelan and husband Chris of Amarillo; a son, Joey Cassista and wife Kimberly of Virginia Beach, VA; five grandchildren, Emily Hayes, Wyatt Phelan, and Dylan Phelan all of Amarillo, Josie Cassista and Sophie Cassista both of Virginia Beach, VA; and special friend, Desiree Hayes of Amarillo.
