Mr. Sumerford was born April 22, 1941 in Temple, Texas to William and Emma Sumerford. He graduated from high school in Midland, and earned his bachelor degree in engineering from Texas Tech University. Bill worked for Parkland Hospital in Dallas as Human Resources financial consultant. He then worked as an engineer for Oryx Energy, retiring in 2000. He married Kathy Barrett in 1997, and they moved to Amarillo in 2000. Bill went on to become a strong political activist. He was president of the Amarillo Tea Party. He was instrumental in getting the tax freeze for seniors and disabled citizens in Amarillo. He also served as secretary of Potter County Republican Party Executive Committee. Most recently, Bill had donated much of his time refurbishing old computers, which he then donated to Homeless Vets, Sharing Hope, Patsy’s Place, and the Legion Program. Bill’s motto was “God, Country, Family”.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Sumerford; 2 sons, Christopher Sumerford and wife Tina of Riverside, CA, and Jim Barrett of Hayden, CO; four daughters, Dawn Sumerford of Riverside, CA, Sherry Watts and husband Craig of Lake Tahoe, NV, Tricia Watson and husband Doug of Ft. Worth, and Sheryl Barrett of Steamboat Springs, CO; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
